Question How do I find out what type of engine I have? (190E)

My 1985 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3 recently blew a cylinder ring, and we put in a new engine (The engine is a 1987 engine) However, I'm not quite sure if it's the 8 valve or 16 valve. Is there a way to tell exactly which engine it is without taking it back to the mechanic who installed it?
