Lights won't go out?

1986 420 SEL ......rear dome & rear door lights won't turn off? Should I suspect the door light switch shorting to ground? What would be the proper part number? How would I determine which switch (door) would be the culprit?

respectfully,
Michael

Pull your rear door switches out and check them with an ohmmeter - could be broken in on position. Even easier - remove the wires from the switches one at a time - if the lights go out - replace the switch.

DIDN'T WORK....I'M STUMPED!

Didn't work!!!!!!
Replaced rear door lamp switches with new ones, front ones check out OK with the Ohmeter and the "pull the wire" trick.
Replaced all fuses in fuse box....correct ones in the proper place.
What the heck am I missing?

Most frustrating!!! Same problem....both rear door lamps & rear dome lamp stays on all the time...............????????

Thought for sure your idea would solve my problem...........now I'm stuck??????

There is a switch on the center console, actually I believe on a 126 it's up above the climate control panel, for the rear dome light. Any chance the switch is just "on"? If not, you could have a wire with insulation gone which is providing a ground path for the dome lights.

hehehehe, Sorry I don't mean to laugh, but...

Check you rear interior light switch, I bet it's on. Should be the last rocker switch on the right side of the console. I just went out and check function on mine, and yes all the rear lights come on including the door lights.

Again, sorry for laughing, but...sometimes it's the simple things.

Well, let's chaulk this post & thread in the "DUMB ASS" file!!!!!

Goes something like this:

Wife: "Honey, the rear door lights & dome light won't go out!"

DA Husband (Me!): Did you check the rocker switch on the panel?"

Wife: "Yes!"

DA Husband procedes to over diagnosis the problem by posted to this site instead of using his "good-eye" to reassure himself that the rocker switch is in the "Off" position!

Three days to wait on the door switches @ $2.40 ea + shipping only to be humbled by the most common sense approach from the experts on this excellent site!

Three threads later....he flips the rocker switch to the "OFF" position!!!!

Call me "COLUMBUS"....if I pulled my head outta my ass, I'd find a whole new world!!!!!!!

Thanks Guys......try not to fall down laughing!

we all do it. Mine was on my wife's VW with daytime running lights (pronounce headlights on all the time). I took it for a ride one night when she first got it and found the high beams would not stay on - only stayed on if you held the high beam lever forward. Drove around holding the stupid lever. Was getting ready to tear the steering column apart when the guy I bought it from asked if I had turned the headlight switch on. DAH - did I feel like a fool!
