Fan clutch loose?
Just developed a rattling noise from the front of the engine. At first I thought it was the timing chain but, it came on quick.
Checked the fan and it can be moved side to side and up and down probably about an 1/8 of an inch. Could this be my noise? How much is too loose? 95 e300

ricali,
This could be your problem. Probably the fan clutch bearing rather than the clutch itself. Take a look at this thread: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?threadid=27203 Mine does not have any slack at all, so your 1/8 inch doesn't sound normal. BTW, I just bought a mechanics stethoscope to check these. I haven't tried it yet.

Loose fan clutch
From your description, it sounds like the fan bearing. I just had the serpentine belt off my M103 and the fan and clutch had no movement. If you are able to take the belt off, you can easily check all the pulleys on the front of the engine.
Good Luck. |
