Question why 722.9 fluid for transfer case?????

In my 06 ML350 MB shows the same part number for 722.9 fluid is to be used in the transfer case.
Is this for any other reason other than keeping it the same atf to avoid confusion, because there is not that much in there that would require such a special fluid that is used in the 7 speed electronic trans.
Also would anyone know how to tell a single speed transfer case from a 2 speed type the single uses a half quart and the 2 speed uses 1.5 qt of atf

I show that the transfer case needs MB part number 001-989-23-03-10 for the transfer case, and that isn't the type 4134 ATF (134) that the trans needs at all.

service product booklet

The book that came with it shows 001 989 45 03 10 for the 164 I thought that was that fancy trans fluid. it shows a different fluid for the G class and another fluid for the 4 matic C,E ,and S class

John, my mistake! I thought you had a W211 e-class....

After re-reading, you have a ML W164 chassis & yes that transfer case DOES use the same ATF that is used in the trans, sorry for the mis-reading of the type of car,, Doc
