Question What makes a Benz a specific model?

Just curious, is it the engine or body style or a combination of both? For example (assuming everything fit) if I were to swap out the engine/transmission of a C63 AMG, and drop it into a CLK 500, would the CLK be considered a CLK 63 AMG or a C63 AMG or would it still be a CLK 500? I'm not assuming anything, I was just curious. Thanks guys.

I guess you could call it whatever you want to call it.
I don't know if the C63 has other mods beside the engine, I would assume it has a lot of other mods from the factory, so I would hesitate to add the "AMG" on to the non-AMG car. Just because it has an AMG engine doesn't mean it has other stuff. That would be sort of like having a 32 Ford roadster with a smallblock Chevy and then calling the Ford a Chevy. Sort of. Work with me here.

But yeah it's YOUR car so if you want to call it something else, it's fine. To everyone else it would be a CLK500 with an engine from a C63AMG.

MB passenger cars begin life as a chassis designation or W-xxx code. What you are referring to is called a sales designation. There are usually several sales designations over the years to account for engine changes (M106, M112, M113, etc) and body styles (sedan, wagon, cabriolet, etc).

An AMG model usually includes engine rework, ECU reprogramming, suspension and brake mods, and interior / exterior trim.

Legally you will have a CLK 500 because that's what is on the title and DMV registration. But that shouldn't reduce the joy from the changes.

Been there, done that, had fun but lost money on the sale.

FYI Notes:
By law it will remain what the VIN# says it is, and you will have a hybrid with reduced value, unless someone likes what you have done and offers a fair price.
Be sure you know the applicable laws of your state are, some can make your life hell just to register/licenses it if/when they become aware of the alterations.

You must fully disclose any alteration and/or re-badging at time of sale, or be open to many State and US government criminal charges.
The following is paranoid butt covering that has saved many from jail and/or fines.
Have a witness or three, several sets of hard copy document covering
everything "not stock" and get everyone to sign all copies, lock your copy in a safe location (give witness copy) and assume the buyer (or flip sale future owner) will try legal action within seven years.

This information may help you understand the system.
