OUCH! 2007 AMG 6.3
My UPS driver brought this to my attention today...
it's his car, and he's had it 3 months... recommendations... He's wondering what her insurance *(amex???) will do? best options? https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-C...030_093728.jpg More pics... |
I told him i'd like the wheels...
|
Car did its job, deformed dramatically to protect the occupants.
Lots more plastic and composite materials than 20 years ago...everything designed to crush and break away to dissipate energy during the collision. Old school 1xx bodies were more brute strength, heavy steel everywhere. Did the air bags deploy? If so that might alone total it due to cost of air bag replacement. Was the engine damaged? Obviously front accessories/rad/condenser toast but what about the engine/oil pan/mounts/transmission? What were the circumstances of the accident? |
That does not look pretty. Looks expensive to repair.
|
My first thought is - I didn't know that being a UPS driver paid so well. Which is related to the next thought - an 07 CLS AMG is still a $40K car, give or take. I would not be surprised if it takes $20K to repair, but I doubt it is totalled. From the photos it does not appear the damage got much past the radiator support, so no frame damage, nothing on the suspension, nothing on the engine. Replace everything from the radiator forward, new sheet metal, and it's good to go.
|
I recently saw a similar vintage S class being repaired at a body shop near my house - The nice bit was that most of the car's front is bolted on. And only required slight pulling of the unibody sheet metal inner fender.

Not good
AMG makes it almost impossible to restore, because most insurance companies demand NEW parts.
As we discussed on the phone, AMG stops making parts before the last vehicle is built, and does not make more = if the warehouse has none you are SOL.. There are some cheap Asian knock off AMG parts/kits, that I would not use on a Zastava Koral (Yugo)... Here is the story (still in litigation) of a beautiful 300SD, similar situation. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/241798-i-need-source-comps-my-83-300sd-any-ideas.html . |
the frame sections of the unibody are bent inwards heavily on both sides...
my biggest concern is the tow truck driver STARTED THE CAR TO UNLOAD IT AT THE BODY SHOP... note the oil cooler ruptured in the picture... imagine how much oil was dumped during the time the car was unloaded... |
Arrgg

Insurance will love that, when they see the cost... . |
car is toast/salvage.....will bring $9K+ at insurance sale if no airbags deployed!!
John, call me if UPS guy wants to sell as is . |
that would make for a sweet engine swap into a W123 wagon.
Plus, a UPS drive owns it.. jeeze |
Drop it off at a dealer and get a price, probably $20k or $30k, car might be totaled.
|
air bags did deploy...
|
Did the insurance company send out an adjuster yet? They are going to probably want to use used parts, but I'd push for new. If the engine is damaged its probably totaled.

Hmm

I would guess it is a 2007 E63 AMG four door sedan 6.3L. . |
