123 hydraulic clutch question
I have a grey market 280CE with 4speed stick trans. Are all the hydraulic clutch parts the same as a manual trans 240D of the same year? [1981]
My car has been in storage for a few years and the fluid reservoir which is shared with the brake master cylinder, has gone down. The brakes still work fine but the clutch just goes to the floor. I have filled the reservoir but still no clutch activation. Any tips from folks that have had this problem? This happened once before and all I had to do was fill the reservoir. I've owned this car for 30 years. Thanks for any help. |

Yes, W123 chassis cars use the same hydraulics.

The brake reservoir feeds the hydraulic clutch, so I suspect your hydraulic clutch is worn and leaking, either the master clutch in the car or the slave underneath. If the master in the car is leaking, there could be fluid on the floor, as there was with mine when it went bad.

solution
You can only solve this by opening the passengers caliper and pushing the brake fluid through the (open) slave cylinder on the transmission, up to the clutch reservoir until you see no bubbles. Its basically identical to bleeding the brakes. I use a clear 1/4 " fish tank hose to see the progress.
If there are leaks,..repair than repeat above. |
