Fuel smell after engine shut down on 1991 560SEL

No fuel smell in the cabin, only after shutting the engine off after an extended drive is there a "gassy" smell under the hood. Also, the engine "stutters" for about five seconds upon start up then smooths out..... any ideas?

Check for leak at the EHA, and for fuel present in the breather hose on the passenger side valve cover, the pressure regulator vents there if it ruptures.

"electro-hydraulic actuator", its the small black box bolted to the side of the fuel distributor.

I too had a gasoline smell after a long drive. I could smell it the most along the driver side fender. I removed the plastic shield in the fender well and saw the one of the lines from the charcoal canister had shrunk and became shorter and was barely connected to the little valve attached to the fender. I touched it and it fell right off. I replaced it with a section of fule line. The smell is still there but much much less. I might replace the charcoal canister next. Or attempt to recodition it.

OK, I spotted the fuel leak, it is dripping small amount of gas from the EHA. Question, do I tighten the screws on the EHA to stop the leak? Or, do I need to buy a new EHA? Thanks!

I don't think you have to buy a whole new EHA, just buy the o-rings and replace those. I'm not sure, but I think some fine-tuning on the fuel injection is necessary after removing and replacing the EHA. Not 100% on this, just basing it on posts I've read here. Cheers!

It's often the little green gaskets where the source of EHA leaks emanate from however the EHA bodies themselves have been known to crack.
Carefully check the EHA body.
Bad news is that the EHA bodies are quite expensive new. Hopefully the problem is only the cheap gaskets.

OK, I careflly replaced the two green "O" seals and the EHA still leaks!! I carefully examined the EHA body and from the outside I cannot see any cracks. Is it possible that the EHA could be cracked internally?

They come Pre-set from Bosch so install and see it it works well out of the box. They usually do.

I have an EHA replacement how-to on the C126 sub-forum at *********.com.

Cheers,

Thank you for the information; looks like a new EHA for me!
