Always start with the brake lamp switch, and then the neutral safety switch on the trans.

Thanks for the tip. Now the question is where do I find the switch? As I said, I've never owned a mb before. Thanks for all your help

Just like a GM car, put your hand on the brake pdeal and start working your way up. You'll see the switch mounted where the master cylinder rod connects to the brake pedal swing arm.
