98,1999,2000 ignition switch replacement
I need to replace just the switch,is it handy to remove instrument cluster?
I read if the forums but links are dead.My understanding is to somehow remove foot panel, unplug switch and pull out?Is it that easy? Also should I be worried about the steering lock? Our should I? what causes steering to lock? Attempting job in one hour. |

Turn the key one click, then there is that squarish button with hash marks (like knurling) on top, with the key turned that button will push down, then the outer sleeve around that huge connector will slide back and the connector will come off the switch. You need the key in the same position to remove the switch itself, there is a button on each side which have to be pushed in, should be easy to spot them.

You say you're replacing "just the switch". Do you mean the lock tumbler, or the actual switch???
They're two different parts. One is simple, the other not so simple.:) |
just the electric switch, lock is perfect was replaced
|
Can you remove the steering lock?No body would steal a w140.
|
to answer my question you can grind off the lock. You still have smart key.
|
The tumbler/switch assembly are contained in the same housing. You'll need to remove it to replace the electrical part. This housing is attached to the steering lock. You'll need to make a tool to depress the locking pins (a coat hanger works well), like Gilly say's. The job can be a PITA, but a DIY'er can do it if you take your time.
