yes , I got both keys, but what I am referring to is relying on the chip to start, no back up there..:) no metal key

anyone have a picture of the connections to thier CD player e class 99 or beyond

ok checked records, carbon filters replaced at 70K, cabin at 92K along with plugs and tranny service and "flex schedule service" whatever that entailed

The flexible schedule service is either an A service or a B service. That's all there is, and they alternate back and forth.

Model Years 1998 and Newer

Mercedes-Benz 10,000 Mile ("A") Service*

Lube and change engine oil and filter. Check and adjust all fluid levels.
Check belt condition and tension. Reset service indicator.
Check brakes and adjust parking brake. Check for fluid leaks.
Inspect all hoses and lines. Check all lights. Check steering fluid and undercarriage.
Replace climate control filter. Check climate control refrigerant and operation.
Check battery condition.
*Every 10,000 miles


Mercedes-Benz 20,000 ("B") Service*

Same as A service; includes tire rotation and balancing.
*Every 20,000 miles

The Mercedes-Benz brake system flush includes removal of the master cylinder
reservoir for cleaning. Drain Brake fluid. Check master cylinder and brake lines for leaks.
Replace fluid and bleed system.
Retailer recommended every 24 months.

Dust / Charcoal Filter Replacement
Reduces bad odors and removes pollutants from air entering passenger compartment.

Power Steering Service
Includes draining power steering fluid, inspection of pump and hoses for leaks,
replacement of power steering fluid and filter.
Check steering for freeplay as well as steering linkage for wear.
Adjust power steering belt.

Automatic Transmission Service
The automatic transmission service includes draining transmission fluid including
torque converter. Replace transmission filter and pan gasket.
Refill with factory recommended fluid. Check transmission mounts and linkages. ROAD TEST

The cooling system service includes pressure test of cooling system and cap.
Inspect hoses, freeze plugs and radiator for leaks and deterioration.
Check drive belts. Flush system including engine block and heater core.
Replace coolant and add antifreeze for 25° below zero.
Retailer recommended every 24 months.

They are both basically oil changes. An A service includes a couple of quick safety inspections. It is only ~1 hour of labor.

The B service is still basically an oil change. It includes more extensive inspections, such as brake pads, serpentine belt, engine air filter, wheels & tires, etc. The dealer is supposed to inspect and replace if required. Some dealers will change the cabin filter or wiper blades at the B service. Prices seem to vary, as does the content of the service.

bout finished with my obsessive sorting of this car. Last question , for today lol:),
wonder if I should keep a spare CPS in the glove box. Seems like it is a culprit and seems common without warning signs?

I vote no. Since 1998 I have always had at least one car that is susceptible to the CPS problem, usually two, and occasionally three at once. I have never had to replace a CPS. So while they do seem to fail occasionally, I think it one of those problems which receives much magnification via the Internet.

As well, the symptoms generally come on gradually and with heat soak. If the car ever stalls, open the hood and let it cool. Most likely it will restart after 10 or 15 minutes. When you get home it will have set a code and/or can dive into a CPS change out.

got my CD player today, I found the optical connector and small black three pin connector, it has a mounting bracket but for the life of me I cant quite figure out how it mounts. Has a pin type protrusion that goes into something ??

I agree that the CPS and other problems (like the spring perch rust problem) is wildly over-blown on the internet.

Having said that, the CPS went out on both my E430's (2000 and 2001 model years).

It is true that if it goes out, your car will fail to start when hot. You'd just have to wait for the CPS to cool down, and your car will start.

If it were me, I'd buy one and keep it as a spare. They are not terribly expensive.

If you are a Mercedes tech, you will have replaced hundreds of them, and will be very skillful on swapping them out.

I watched my neighbor / tech do it in less than 10 minutes. The problem is that it is between the firewall and the engine. You can feel it, but not really see it. He reached down with his socket, disconnected and removed it, and put the new one back on in short order.

If it was your first time, you'll spend more time trying to locate and and put your socket on it than it will take you to remove it.

The cd player mounts in the box/bracket first, then the box/bracket (with the cd player mounted inside) bolts with two sheet metal screws to the predrilled holes in the frame rail...see attached picture.

.I see my bracket is a bit different but looks like I can make it work. The holes on my car on that sheetmetal mounting area do not line up. Are there rubber shocks or other shock material around/with the mounting bolts?, and the wires , come from the side or the bottom, I will have to make a hole in the fender sound proofing ( grey) material
