now it appears the last entry in the log book was 10,000 miles ago with an oil change mobile 5-40 syntheitc it looks to be down 1.5 quarts, and obviously needs changed

I'm not sure any manufacturer would consider 1.5 quarts in 10,000 miles as out of spec.
At this point, you don't even know if the engine was under-filled at the last oil change.
