Many, many questions..
Hi guys and gals -
I just joined the ranks of 124 owners with the purchase of a 92 300e with a 2.6 engine. It's got 161,000 on it and will replace my 90 300sel that has a whopping 346,000. So far, I love the way it drives and the fuel mileage. I've only put about 150 miles on it and already have a to do list as long as my arm. It sat about 2 years so changing all fluids are at the top of the list. I do need some help with other things on my list. The original radio (Becker 1432, I think) did nothing but give an E2 code when I got it. The round plug was unplugged from the trunk unit (receiver ?). I plugged it in and replaced the missing fuse back there. Now it powers up, will seek and scan, and gives a display but I have no volume. Also, the antenna does not go up and I can't hear the motor run. I don't have a manual yet and am trying to figure out all the switches on the dash. I have one that I'm not sure of, the one that shows a seat. Is it for the rear seat headrests? They are both laying down and the switch does nothing. Temperature display - I got nothing on the display. Is there a separate fuse for it. Everything else works on the car, at least everything I know it has. Thanks in advance for any help. Ken

The radio problem may be the fader switchin the center console, if that is bad it will wipe out all speakers. The part in the trunk might be an amp, that could also be the problem. I might have something that would tell what the E2 code was, but if it is gone now it may be irrelavent (sp) (might not matter, LOL). i think there is also a fuse in the receiver itself.
The antenna problem, it might be shut off, IIRC there is also a switch in the radio stack area (row of switches) to have the antenna off, on "auto" (middle) and all the way high (for best AM reception), make sure the antenna switch is in the middle position. Either that or the antenna mast might be seized if the car sat that long, especially if it was outside. Correct on the headrest switch, I think you are right in the identification. But it only LOWERS the headrests on the back seat, does not raise them. Raise them up manually, then try the switch, they should then fall down to the lower position.

Temp display, no seperate fuse that I am aware of. I think the display is available seperately though. It could be the display or it could be the sensor, wait and see if you get more replies. I want to say the display part is more than likely the problem if it is just blank. Look out on the bumper and make sure the sensor is actually there, because I am thinking if someone just cut the sensor tip off (poor body work for example) that this might give you a blank screen as well. I am a big advocate of testing things before replacing anything, don't just randomly buy parts without being at least relatively sure it will fix the problem.
PS those amps in the trunk were sort of a sore spot because you'd get a water leak into the trunk and zap them out. Unless you want to really keep the car stock you might be heading for an aftermarket radio. And that's not really such a bad thing, given the change in entertainment media since this car came out, might be nice to have at least a CD player and MP3 capablities. Unless you are like me, an old throwback who still misses 8 track and CB radios, heh heh.

if u dont manage to fix your temperature display , contact forum member jamesdean he fixes them. checkout the following thread for more info:http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/313607-outdoor-temp-display-repair.html
replacing all the fluids and filters sounds like a good idea. the only thing i would add, is to have your ball joints inspected by a reputable MB indy shop, or just replace them if you want peace of mind, cause when a ball joint breaks the car can no longer be driven, even getting it up on a flat-bed is a real pain. example, see post#2: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/314231-ball-joint-failure-w124.html hope you enjoy your new benz |
