Head bolt socket
I got mine from samstag sales in Florida I think mine is made by German company called stalwille. It is an xzn or triple square socket. Looks like a torx with 12bumps instead of 6. I seem to remember there is another type of bolt but i do not remember the type of fastener. The Mercedes manual describes measuring the length if the bolts to see if they can be reused. I just bought new ones. Don't remember the torque. I think it was torque all bolts to a certain rating then turning them 90 degrees And then turning them 90 degrees again

Probably m10 or 12. Check the shop manual. Triple squares can be found at NAPA. Don't know your engine, but the sequence & torque method will be in a mercedes FSM or haynes book.

12mm 12pt torx. I believe NAPA carries these, according to other posts I have read. I own one from Hazet tools, a high quality piece that cost $30+. Search the web! they're easy to find.

These are known as Triple Square / XZN. ( Fixed missing XZN reference per other posts. ) They are not Torx.
Check around, I've gotten them 4" long then a standard socket is used to drive. This can be helpful when castings block the path of a short drive bit. Last edited by 97 SL320; 02-24-2013 at 03:43 PM. Reason: Added XZN reference |

Head bolt socket
Stalwille xzn socket size m 12. It has a Mercedes part number on it it is 617 589 00 10 00. If you are pulling the head you also need a 17 mm hex and a 12 mm hex to remove and reinstall the timing chain tensioner. Check the service manual for procedure for this and for torqueing the head bolts
