'89 300SE valve body question

I have been bringing my W126 back to life after it sat for a couple years. I had new head gasket, valve guides, timing chain and guides installed. I have been working through some HVAC issues and have had a transmission issues almost since the begining.

The first couple of weeks she shifted great...maybe slightly on the long side. One day while leaving work I noticed it would go through all the gears by 25mph. I figure Bowden cable came loose.....nope its on, its in great shape. When you pull the cable from the engine end, you can feel the resistance and spring action on trans end. I did a trans service(filter and fluid) hoping to find something simple when we dropped the pan....everything looks normal. Fluid looked GREAT!! No metal at all. I see where the cable attaches and goes into the valve body. What does it attach to that makes the shift points? Is there a way to fix this? Can I drop the valve body and take a peek? I admit that transmissions indimidate me big time.

I currently have been shifting manually when I need to get to speed quickly. Shifts nice and firm, no slipping or flaring.

What are my options?
