Bake Caliper Removal
88' 420 SEL. . . I tried removing the front caliper on the way to replacing/repacking the wheel bearings. I got the mounting bolts off but then I couldn't get the caliper free of the disk. There's a small wear ridge at the outside edge of the disk and I couldn't get the pads past the ridge. I guess I should have tried pushing the pad piston back but not having a how-to reference I wasn't sure how I should proceed. I was afraid of scratching the disk or the pads by jamming a screw driver between them So, how do I slip the caliper free of the disk? BTW, has anybody found brake pad and disk replacement covered in the CD manual? I find lots of brake refrences on the CD, but no directions on how to replace pads and disks.

You'll have to pry against something to get the piston to retract. I stick the handle of a second screwdriver into the opening in the caliper bracket and pry against that.
