Idler bushes

Need to change my idler bushes, according to my MOT station. Is this a blinkin' awkward job, considering I'm doing it outside my house on the street? Do they come out ok? Any special tools needed?

Thanks in advance

Assuming this is the idler arm bushings on the TD, it's a pretty easy job. I believe you don't have to remove the exhaust pipe for clearance as you do with other models. You need a hefty amount of torque to release the nut which has a spec of around 140 lbft (check a reference!). The kit will come with new rubber, washers, big bolt and nut. All you have to do is get them in the right order. Use a silicone based lubricant or dish washing soap on the new rubber only if it's a tight fit. Maybe talc will work. Petroleum based lubricants degrade rubber.

What I haven't said is that you have to work under the car while it's on stands. Probably not something you want to with the threat of public traffic. Maybe one of your friends will lend you a level driveway for a half hour.
