Do I remember correctly your reverse was about to fail or was intermittent?

Yes, indeed. For about 2 years now. I have slight reverse mostly, but on rare occasions the reverse is completely normal as if nothing is wrong. I did several searches and most point to B3 band, but I have yet to encounter any posts where someone's reverse is fully functional again as mine will sometimes be. I'm hesitant on a rebuild because, like the oe cat, I'm afraid aftermarket/rebuild will not last as long as original. I have not had any problem with any other gears and the little reverse loss is very well manageable. Not completely opposed to rebuild, just want to make sure its really necessary and not something simple that's causing the on again off again reverse issue. Car has 326,281 miles. I've had car since 05, with records and now I keep a very detailed record of everything from oil change dates and miles to replacing any serviceable component of the car and I can tell you that all fluids, filters, ignition, starting/charging, and suspension components were all done 6 months or less. Though transmission is still intermittent, I have still drained torque converter and pan, replaced filter and pan gasket as well, fluid was red when I changed it and no sediment in bottom of pan.

hey
my car also has the 722.4 transmission and it occasionally makes the whistling noise you referred to when selecting Reverse. here's some info i have found on the problem: see post #6: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/106565-help-oil-leak-urgently-requested.html#post733559 and below are two attachments that i converted from pdf to jpeg . one covers slipping reverse, the other whistling reverse. good luck and let me know if you manage to fix it |

That noise is hydraulic pressure/flow from the fluid in the trans when reverse is engaged, a couple of ours do it slightly also.
