License plate lights

My wifes '07 e350 showed a notice that both license plate lights were out. also could not open trunk. Did finally open trunk using the key-she had groceries. I replaced both bulbs but still getting notice that right & left lights not working. And trunk will not open using remote or the button on driver door. without using key. any suggestions. Mechanically I do ok, but not the best electrically.

Sounds like a wiring problem to the trunk lid. I'd check wiring running through the hinge, might be a connector came apart or some wires frayed/shorted.

X2. Unwrap the harness and have a look. You'll find the problem pretty quick.

Smile lights

Thanks million. It was the brown ground wire that had broken. striped the ends and used a wire nut to splice. The wife is happy now. Mr too.

broken wires

Found same in wife's trunk. Brown wire broken and chafed in two places. Easy fix. Indications were first warning on dash that license plate lights were out, then trunk would not open w/ electric release. Appears as though the wire insulation gets extremely brittle. I added length to wires, shrink wrapped soldered joints, then wrapped complete loom in several layers of friction tape-in addition to the already existing plastic wrap (factory on ours). Dealer said not covered under extended warranty and best guess would be "around" $300. Took me total of 1/2 hour, only because neighbor stopped by to help.

Is it any wonder why people avoid the dealers?
