'91 300CE - rattling from under my gear shifter

I have this really annoying rattle coming from under my gear shift lever on my W124 300CE. It only happens when I make a right-hand or left-hand turn - sounds like a big nut is rolling from side to side inside my shifter. Sounds like something is loose...

I looked under the car and am wondering if it could be coming from the very noticeable slop in the shift rod - it looks like the white, plastic bushing is gone (the clip is still there, but no bushing). Is this possible? How many of these bushings should there be on the shift rod??

Thanks,
Ryan

There are 2, yes thats why yours is rattling, best way to do it is to unscew front lever , and install bushing off the car then reinstall front lever, otherwise its tough unless you have the special pliers to install, but long needle nose can work in place of tool

the way I found the easiest (mostly because my special case is a 722.4xx trans) was to cut the bushing and insert it fully on one edge then use a screw driver to work the entire bushing into the hole. Works like a charm and does not affect the working or load of the bushing.

The bushing is broken or gone. You can replace them or you can do what I did to my SDL. I cut a length of small rubber hose and use it as an insert/bushing. No more rattling and is free.

Or you can use a zip tie and get the shifter super tight and crisp like I did. I used 2 nylon zip ties as I do not want to do the job again.
