2001 e320 wont restart

I have only had the car a little over a week now. I got the ESP and ABS malfunctions light up on me one time and they went out after I turned the car off and restarted sometime later....Well at 10pm tonight they came on again and was giving me an extremely sluggish throttle. It felt like the transmission was starting out in second gear. So I pull up to the next redlight on 4 lanes of 41 hwy and I decided to do a restart while the light was red..... BIG NO NO...It would not restart. I disconnected the battery and YEAH it cleared those codes but still NO restart. I hooked my scanner to it in the middle of traffic (hazards on and hood up) and it came back clear with no codes showing. hmmmm

2 hrs later I am now here typing this love letter and my car had to be flat bedded (it would not come out of park so he drug it on the flatbed ARGH!) to my shop because I did not know what else to do this time of night in the middle of the road.

I love this car and it has been running perfectly...But what is causing this??

Did it crank? First thing to check is the battery and charging system.

Limp home mode than no go mode. Any fluids spilled down shifter on center console? Also, there is an emergency release for the shift lever located below the "D" on the center console that can be depressed with a thin ink pen or pencil that when depressed will permit the shift lever to be moved out of park. Inexperienced tow truck operator for sure. Mark

My mechanic showed me the button to get it out of park this am with a pen. The car had been running and shifting great. Just the 2 lights came on and I turned the car off to simply restart to make them go away. I had done this once before and it worked. This time it did not. Just left me stranded. The car would not crank, click or anything. Just nothing. I diconnected the battery for a while hoping it would resolve itself to no avail. As far as I know I have not spilled any drinks in the shifter gate. My mechanic explained to me the sluggish throttle response was due to the ESP flashing. The ESP was trying to do its job by killing the power. No news of diagnosis from them yet. Thanks guys!

yes I sure will I am confined to the gas hog expedition right now...Like driving a barn down the road at a fine 13mpg

The no crank symptom points to low juice. I will use my Kreskin cap to predict that the shop recommends a new battery. However, the alternator brushes will be worn at your mileage, too. I would replace them now. Also, measure cables and connections for voltage drops from corrosion or bad connections.

completel refusal to crank and such error codes usually point to the K40 relay module.

The K40 module is the cluster assembly of relays in the underhood fuse and control panel center.

I did not have any shifting problems BUT this is a good set of videos dealing with the conductor plate in the 722 tranny.

From what my indy told me over the phone today..he is going to need to replace the conductor plate and the TCM along with some fuses and relay. He is going to try and clean up as much of the mess as he can..The transmission fluid "wicked" up to the module in the engine bay shorting various fuses and wreaking havic. My car wont restart because the "computer" (yall help me with this) is unsure what gear the car is in. Sooooo it wont restart. Cost $1650 to make it right again.

Not sure what I am going to do yet. I had lunch with a friend that's in town from Detroit and he thinks he can get me the parts for free or really cheap. He work for Detroit Diesel and his plant remans THIS transmission for Daimler. He is flying back tomorrow to mgo home and will see what he can do to help me out on Monday.

It could be a bad conductor plate but $15 updated connector usually repairs the leak condition. The transmission harness and engine module are another matter. Mark

I've seen the tcm clean up. A transmission service every 40k miles should include the connector then you won't ever have this issue. Remind me how many miles are on the car?

Thanks Jim. The car has 160k now with a dealer tranny service done at 90k. It was shifting and performing flawlessly before it quit on me this week. I have met a young man that works at a Mercedes dealer that is willing to work on it for me. He seems to think some of the parts should clean up as well. We both agree to change a few items including the conductor plate.

Hoe is your wagon holding up? Did you get it all cleaned up and running well?

Wife loves the wagon. It turned out great. I'm so impressed with the chassis I'm in the market for a 05/06 E class CDI over the next year or so.

As far as sorting yours out clean the tcm, service the transmission along with replacement of the connector and see what happens. Easy to replace conductor plate while pan off too.
