1986 300sl new fuel pump and filter still no luck Please help.

Hi. I just got done replacing my fuel pump and filter on my 86 300sl and put about a gallon of gas in it. It finally started and idled for about a minute so I let it back off the jacks and thought I fixed it but now if it starts and I rev. the motor it dies on me.Earlier I thought it might be a bad fuel pump reg.so I wired it to an aftermarket one which worked for awhile. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks. Greg. The weather's nice but I can't drive my convertible!

Why was the pump changed?

One gal fuel from empty might not be enough to run the car, add one more gal.

I'll add more gas tomorrow and try again. I think the car was able to run with a gallon or so of gas because the rear of the car was elevated and when I let it down it probably wasn't enough gas to run it. Hope that's all it is. I changed the pump because it acted like it ran out of gas going up my driveway. Also the old pump was real hot to the touch. According to the papers I got with the car, it's been changed a couple of times before over the years. Thanks Greg.
