Ok..dumbest rookie question yet...
Next to the light switch on my 500e in a plastic button with a red light above it. Being a curious sort, I worked up the courage to actually push the button. It did not activate an ejector seat, fortunately. It makes a beep like sound. If I hold the button down for awhile, the button flashes red for awhile and then yellow. I've never seen the red light above the button light up. I sort of assumed that it was some kind of after market alarm, radar detector, or possibly asr defeat switch. But it doesn't seem to do anything. Any ideas would appreciated to verify it's function.

It arms the afterburners in conjunction with the passing gear

Then that would explain the "use jet fuel only" decal by the filler cap?

It might also be the launch button for your 'on-board' rocket propelled grenades, when there is slow car in your way.

That could be it - the "reload" light on the dash stays lit. What the part # for the replacements? Does AMG or Renntech make more powerful ones than the OEM?

There should also be a safeing pin around somewhere with a big red tag that says "Remove before Launch"

Also, please check your owners manual for disengaging RPG launcher when reloading. The previous owner may have emptied the magazine before you acquired the car.
You may have to pull the button out, and twist clockwise or counter clockwise, I don't remember which...

If the car had complete maintance history wouldn't that be covered? Perhaps the dealer might know.

That's right. Flip through you dealer service manual, and see if that's been checked off.
What was I thinking???

Hmmm...when that m5 disappeared from my rear view mirror, I had just assumed it was because of the distance...that's when the reload light came on...you don't suppose I accidentally....??

Yep, wouldn't surprise me at all.
And I wouldn't lose any sleep over it either. Worse things have happened. Could've been a 911 or a 300ZX Turbo, or a Plymouth Barracuda...
