Inside the Box: W126 Early Gen II Automatic Climate Control Unit

Morning all!

Just thought I post up another photo album on a climate control unit that I worked on for one of our members here.

I've got a few more albums to post up as well including a R107 instrument cluster and climate control system!

This unit comes from a very early Gen II W126, a euro 1986 560SEL.

I'm very happy to report that I was able to restore the unit to a fully functional state.

Thumbs up Well And Truly Satisfied!

As the very happy owner of the above mentioned unit which was overhauled for me a few weeks back, “fully functional” is perhaps a bit of an understatement. Having almost totally forgotten how good it feels to enjoy Automatic Climate Control the way it should be a simply brilliant job, very well done is how I would describe the results.

Part of the problem I faced (while periodically contemplating the c. $1,500 price tag for an MB rebuild) was that gradually over time, having made my peace with less and and less functionality, I had convinced myself that it was “just one of those things” and quit looking for a constructive solution aside from saying to myself that “It surely must be the mono-valve and if not that, then it is the relay...” every year when summer rolled around.

Best of all, I was able to retain my original ACC unit – no small matter if you, like me, are leery of buying mass-market, “re-built” electrical components of unknown provenance on the sound theory that you might very well be buying into somebody else's problem.

So if you find yourself living unhappily in quiet desperation with a failing ACC unit I'd recommend dropping JamesDean a line instead because the results will be nothing short of a revelation.
