'99 E320 AWD wagon - worth $2000?
Found a local '99 E320 wagon - they say it is the AWD model. Looks nice for $2000. Are these good cars?
Trouble spots? Thanks! |

Rust is probably the biggest concern.

agree with the rust
I've had several w210s (3 wagons and a sedan) and haven't had major problems with any of them. Of the cars below, the 01 has about 150k miles and the 02 has 130k. The 02 is starting to show some rust (it was in NY state at one time). The 02 has a little rust under the rear window (common), but no other that I can see. It has spent most of its lfe in PA (where the road salt is bad, but not as bad as NY).
If the car you are looking at is from the south east, rust may not be much of an issue for awhile. Other than rust, my biggest concern would be transmission service. Its a big plus if has been serviced with proper fluid.

If you are going to pay 2k, find a 2000 to 2002. They pop up at this price.
The AWD versions are more expensive and more difficult to work on. If you do not need the AWD, get a regular one. Here in the west we do not really have any rust issues.. For you East-Coast guys, rust is a issue, and you can find cosmetic issues, yet the critical rust issue on the W210 is front spring perch issue..Take a look at post 62, and the AWD's do not have this issue. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/95228-w210-diesel-owners-spring-perch-failure-please-read-5.html Get a 2000 to 2002 to avoid having a K2 bearing failure in the transmission . If you are looking, and find some super deal on a car. You hear this gear sound/ whine...run, do not walk...K2 bearing failure?? Martin |

Yeah buy the 00-02 if possible. Worth averting the expensive transmission repair when the K2 decides to kick the bucket. An expensive mess you don't want to have to deal with. By the time the K2 kicks the bucket, the trans isn't even worth taking apart and rebuilding.
W210s are dime a dozen at 2k. Even now a W210 turbo diesel will only fetch about $4500.00.

W210 is the bargain among used MBs at the moment because of its well earned reputation. I picked up a $3k e300 non turbo diesel of my dad and it has turned out to be an excellent bargain. I did have to fix the AC clutch and K40 relay but beyond that its been flawless. The ergonomics are way beyond my W124, the suspension is smoother and there's less wind noise. I wish they had brought over a diesel wagon.
