There are 2 connectors at the read of the instrument cluster, make sure they are installed and latched. The cluster pushed out from the back or you can make hooks to extract it from the front. In any case, the steering wheel is pretty close to the cluster unless you have power tilt / telescope .( there will be a switch on the left lower area of the column just past the steering wheel )

The display error is a sign of either a failing windshield wash level sensor or the coolant level sensor (forget which).
The fuel gauge not responding is usually the level assembly gone a bit haywire - it also contains the fuel tank pressure sensor. btw - the gauges are easy to remove, get a wire coat hanger, bend it to shape of two handles and the workign edge should be a 90 degree hook about 1/8 of an inch only, wedge it between the gauge bezel and the wood trim to contact the teeth of the gauge bezel from the back, it will pull out smoothly (might take a side to side coaxing to get it going) if you have removed W124 gauges, its the same principle.
