M113 spark plugs
I pulled a couple plugs out of my newly acquired E430 today to take a look at their condition. They are a bit worn F8DPER's which leads me to believe they may be original since Bosch changed over to the FR8DPP33 in the early 2000's.
The straight across replacement for the F8DPER is FR8DPP33+ or 7422. There is also a FR8DPP33X or 8100 which is also a double platinum plug. Does anyone know the difference between the two? I can't seem to find much. I can get the 8100's quite a bit cheaper than the 7422's.

I believe the 8100s have a fine wire center electrode. I haven't heard anyone swear by their benefits, so 7422 should be fine.

my experience is limited to other cheaper platinum plugs, not the number mentioned.
the cheaper plats always foul and will lean towards longer starts and lower mileage after about 8-10k miles. considering there's 16 to do every 60k or so, i'd go with the real plug, not the x's. good luck, chuck. |

The 7422's are fine wire as well I believe. I think the standard electrode went away with the F8DPER.

The "X" suffix (root number for your 8100) designates a preset gap of 1.1mm, so you'd have to adjust them and you have to be uber-careful about it since it's easy to damage the fine-wire center electrode. The ground electrode has a raised design and is blunt-cut, Nickel-Yttrium and Platinum.
The ground electrode on the 7422 is a traditional design with a taper cut; how much difference that makes is anyone's guess. The Bosch 9652, which is a fine wire iridium plug, has been used by many folks without any issues. The ground electrode on it apes the 7422. I know lots of people who have used the 7422 and the 9652 plugs, but I don't know anyone who has used the 8100 in the M112 or M113 engines. You might search around on some of the other forums for some feedback if you are leaning that way. I was going to attach the Bosch guide which has lots of useful information, but PP only allows a 732kb pdf file size (apparently they think it is 2002), so I'll just give you the link to it: http://mdm.boschwebservices.com/vpf-media/SparkPlugs/PDF/Catalog_Spark_Plugs.pdf Hope that helps. Good luck. |

Great, thanks. That's exactly what I needed to know. I've found the 9652 at the same price as the 7422 so I'll go with the iridiums.
