mercedes 450 slc stalling in drive/reverse gear

Hi all,i hope you can assist me,i have a 70's model 450 slc,the car starts,and idles and revvs,but as soon as jou put it into drive or reverse it dies unless you step on the accelerator,but then the engine doesnt run smoothly and subsequently dies as soos as you bring it to a standstill.i hope someone can help!thanks

Unfortunately i dont know,the car was deregustered and reregistered in 1995
