1977 450sl fuel flooding on startup.

I recently bought a 1977 SL that would not start. I was able to get a good deal for that reason, but am trying to get it to start up now. The car sat over the past several months in storage, and ran prior to that.

I have removed the injectors and bench tested them. they are decent, not perfect. I have pulled the plugs several times to dry them because the car would flood under cranking. I have gone through the ignition and it all seems in order. I get fuel to the distributor, but don't really know what is going on inside there. I do get fuel at the injectors if i crack the lines.

what is strange to me (perhaps this is obvious to you all) is that the car will fire for a second or two after sitting and drying out. once it does this it will not start for a while. However, if i pull the FP relay right after this situation, it will start and burn the fuel out of the system…then stall. The only way I can get it to start again right away is to plug the relay back in and hit the key. then this cycle begins again.

I'm wondering if there is something that is not telling the fuel pump to send enough (or too much) fuel while the relay is plugged in…each time before i unplug the relay and burn out the surplus.

thanks.
