Front Window Regulator Bind

Hey Guys,

Can't seem to figure this one out.

I recently purchased an 87 300td and have been going heavy on repair work. One such item is the non functioning front left window. I've replaced/ rebuilt plenty of rear regulators before but this is the first front I've ever had to do.

I pulled the existing regulator and motor out and it works fine. The car had been sitting awhile so I figured it seized up in its track. I then cleaned, degreased, and re-greased everything and reinstalled. Works fine. Great.

Then when I run it all the way to the open position, and release the switch after the window has come to stop, and try to close. It's bound up and wont move.

I can unbind it by taking a flathead and prying on the gears while the window switch is pressed to close.

Is there a rubber stop somewhere that I'm missing that is allowing the window to go too far down?

I tried popping in another (working) regulator/motor and got the same result. Frustrating.

My concern is that the door/ door track is warped or bent and is causing the regulators to sieze.

Thoughts? Suggestions? all appreciated

The gears on those regulators aren't very sturdy. If the window stop isn't set right, they'll travel too far and bind things up by twisting just enough. At least that's what I figured on mine.

Gotcha thanks for the info.

Is the window stop built into the regulator or is it part of the track that is attached to the door? I didn't see any sort of stop on the track itself. That was where my question about a rubber stop was coming from.

How do I go about adjusting it?

I don't remember exactly. But I do remember this. Mine would push the window up and push a little too far and the gears would slightly mis-align with the torque of the motor pushing too hard. They would twist just a little and then the thing wouldn't reverse to lower the window. I ended up getting a new regulator and all was well. But as I recall I ended up cutting the cable eventually to lower the window and get it apart. Sorry its been over 10 years.

That's more or less whats happening with mine, except when the window is at the bottom. When I pry to release the bind on the gears, I can see the row of gears twist inward towards the door. I guess I'll continue throwing regulators at it, if the issue persists I'll see about making a rubber window stop.

Thanks again for the information
