w126 Air Intake Duct

I'm trying to figure out which year and model W126 came with the intake air temperature sensor mounted into the duct that is located next to the radiator. I know that my '91 560SEL doesn't have this sensor, but I know that some w126s do. I need to find the duct that I can put the sensor into for my M119 project. The part that I'm looking for is #245 in the picture I have attached.

My '90 300SEL has that... but ducting on opposite side.

Nothing V8 I own(ed) has had that.

Curious for the answer.

Does your 300SEL have the sensor near the radiator or up near the air filter housing? I ask because I have to use a 300SEL air duct for the driver's side anyway, so that it will match the diameter and shape of the M119 ducting.

Closer to the filter housing.

Solved!

I finally found the answer. It seems the intake air temperature sensor was only utilized on Euro V8 cars in the W126. I'm not sure why it was eliminated for the U.S. market.

However, the important thing is that the duct itself is the same between U.S. and Euro cars. The port for the sensor on U.S. cars is sealed with a plastic plug. It can be removed with a bit of careful prying. I installed the sensor on mine and it fits perfectly.

I love being able to solve a problem for free!

I had a first gen W126 ECE car (380SE actually) and it did not have that sensor and I cannot recall seeing that sensor on the 500SELs I have seen for parts.

Was it a second gen thing only?

I think it may have only been on 2nd Gen W126s as I could only find pictures of it from Euro 560s.

Could it be that the higher compression engines required better A/F ratio management/data?
