It's showing three different configurations for the 3 different circuit boards, I believe.

Hmmm. More confusion. D'oh. Key in 1997 W210 sometimes spins 180 deg counter clockwise and will not come out of ignition barrel. After some jiggling and on/off it comes out with a 'click'.

Inserting ign' key it operates fine. This 'not getting key out of ignition' happens from time to time, not every time.

Who installed your ignition barrel Don? My '99 ML420 key has worked flawlessly for 4 years until recently when the flip blade housing broke across the retainer pin and allowed the blade to fall out of the fob.

For a few days I started the ML by holding the blade with a pair of Vise Grips and holding the fob near the ign' lock.

Mercedes OKC wants $225.00 for new flip key and programming.

This got old in a hurry so I bought a new fob from China for $38.00 and will transfer the chip and remote into the new fob as soon as I can find a punch/drift small enough to punch out the flip key roll pin.

Any ideas on this ?

Your US '97 does not have a programable key, but somewhere in the world there may be '97s that use the smart key. I believe they showed up in '98 in the US E class.

On the 97 there is a cable that runs from the shifter to brake pedal to ig lock. The trans must be in park , foot off brake in order to turn that last little bit to remove the key. It should click as the key is withdrawn from the lock. There may be a cable problem here or the lock system is wearing out.

When you split the housing of the new fob you can transfer the entire metal portion to the new fob. Also, when using the key, grip it near the base and not at the end. Gripping at the end tends to split housings.

If this is true I have a question:

With the scanner..Snap-On. Solus Ultra w/Euro ....it says that 5 keys have already been programmed.

My '99 ML.......I need to install the old blade into the new fob, so I need to punch out the tiny roll pin as the new blade is a blank. They sent instruction about the little 'remote' board inside the fob. The 'flip' hinge pocket for the blade broke out so cannot transfer the metal hinge..

When a new key is made for your car, the identity chip is programed by the outfit that makes the key. I believe there is a finite number of keys that can be made before MB stops making keys for that VIN. I guess that is what is being read, but I am surprised your car would know how many keys had been made.

I understand 8 Mercedes OE keys are the maximum to be issued to each vehicle.

This number of keys is pre recorded by the on board DAS .....Everything you always wanted to know about DAS - Mercedes-Benz Forum

I would have spent the $200+ at Mercedes and got a REAL key instead of some Chinese knock off.
