1980 450SL - Noise when turning wheel -- here are symptoms - not sure it's bearings
Hi all -
I have a 1980 450SL that recently has been making a humming/whirrrrr/minor vibration when I make turns. Based on most things I've read, I would immediately think it was the wheel bearings, but I realized that even when I'm in idle and I turn the wheel, I get the same sounds and vibration. Would the bearings do this even when the car is not moving and the wheel is just being turned, or what else could it be? Thanks! |

No, the car needs to be moving. In your case, I would suspect the noise is coming from the steering system then.

Thanks guys. I think I got it figured out! I think it was an issue with my steering pump.
