190E 5-speed getrag transmission question

Someone is offering to sell me a 5-speed transmission that came off of a 2.3 8V car. I am assuming that this would be the same tranny that is on the 16V. Did mercedes only make one 5-speed manual transmission for the 2.3 8V and the 2.3 16V?

190E 2.3/2.3-16 Transmissions

According to the Technical Data Book December 1988, the 2.3-8V and 2.3-16V transmissions had different part numbers:

8V 717.411
16V 717.404

That being said, the real question is what are the differences?

That, I cannot tell you, sorry! Ratios could be found by searching through the appropriate manuals. Dimensions and mounting points are another matter.

The 2.3-16v is not the same getrag tranny as the 2.3 8v; the driveshaft from the 16 is the same as the 2.6 6 cylinder. Although, it may bold up, you will need to replace the driveshaft (and probably the differential).

and to point out the obvious, the 16v trans had the coveted dog leg shift pattern, so the gear selector and linkages are all different

The 16v tranny is beefier and has a one to one fifth gear. The fifth on all other fivers is an od and fourth is one to one.

On the 16v manual, it is very different in several ways from the 8v tranny. ratio, "strength", internals, shift pattern, etc. Be sure you want the dog leg pattern on the 16v manual, it is a little diff and if anyone else ever drives your car, they like to confuse reverse and 1st gear, making lots of grinding and noise and eatting of clutches.

Chuni,
Is the 717.432 tranny a manual? From what? My 16v is an auto and yes , I wanted it like that and I like it. I have never had a clutch problem and I dont race it. What I am looking at doing is trying to find a tranny from a 92 or 93 190E, it has 1st gear start. Any idea on this? Not sure if the tranny from a 92 or 93 w201 will bolt straight up to my 16v 2.3.

Yes its a manual. iirc all 91+ 2.6 190es have 1st gear start (probably more that i cant think of), but you would need the 2.3 flywheel, which i dont know if it fits in the 2.6 trans. Actually, it has to, i swear all 190s had 722.4s
EDIT: sorry, i keep forgetting its a 16V auto! Do you know your tranny model? Or just put your vin in here: http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng and tell me the trans number
i know the 16v auto trans were alot beefier

chuni,
I would love to get a 91+ 2.6 auto tranny with first gear start in my 16v. Not sure if I would be able to use my current flywheel, or would have to get a different one from something else. My surrent tranny 722.410 i think, is slipping.

the dog leg shift is used on race cars. it is more convenient at speed to be able to shift into fifth without doing the dog leg thing.

the 16v was homologated for racing so it has the dog leg shift pattern with the beefier close ratio box.

I think you would end up using your stock flywheel and torque converter and then just bolting it to the trans. I have a blown one i can ship you if you pay for shipping. Dont know if it would be worth it for a test fir ot not...
