ARS Light
Hi,
I've got a 1992 S600 here in Kampala. I think the engine might be stuck in limp mode. The engine revs fine under no load. However, it cannot make it up the slightest hill. There is no power under load. However, the ARS light on the dash is not lit. Either with just the ignition on or the engine running. So there is no external confirmation of limp mode. Even when I try to put it into limp mode by manipulating the throttle assy under the bonnet there is no ARS light. I pulled the dash this morning, and confirmed the bulb and socket were fine. I pulled all the control modules in the coffin and cleaned the contacts. My question: Is the ARS light supposed to come on when the ignition is first turned on? If so, any thoughts on why it would not be lit? There is no one here with diagnostics capability. I have build a LED blink reader, however, I cannot pull any codes from the X11/41. The blink reader is working fine. Again, clueless about why I can't get any blink codes. I found a link on how to disable limp mode by an RC network connected between pin 1 and 6 on the X11/14 port. That is next on my list to try. TIA

As you probably know, when you turn the key to the first detent, all lights on the dash should light, then they drop out when you fire it up. And that car is a rocket so if you are having problems then it is in limp mode. Why don't you go to the Benz forum, 140 Section and pose your problems. There are many 120 owners there (including me). I'll post this then find the exact address for you and re-post.
