Question E320 Cabriolet Advice

A neighbor is offering to sell me his 1995 E320 Cabriolet.

The car has only 8,544 miles on it, has never been driven under the rain nor damage in an accident. Everything works and looks better than new.

The question is: how reliable is the power operated roof?

Any other concerns I should be aware of this particular model?

I know that the automatic 5-speed transmission was changed under warranty when the car had about 600 miles on it. It just failed suddenly. Besides that there are no major repairs on the car.

I have plenty of experience with the W124 chassis as I had owned already three T wagons, but I am not familiar with how realiable the cabriolets are.

Any comments would be appreciated.

FYI, the transmission is not a 5 speed auto but a 4 speed auto.

I'm sorry, but I forgot to mention that the E320 Cabriolet is a European edition car (as all cars imported here are).

In the European version you were able to specify code No. 425 (Automatic 5-speed electronic-controlled transmission) for the six-cylinder gas vehicles inthe W124 series -any model-. The extra costed D.M. 4,460 as it is listed on a copy of the invoice the owner provided me. The five-speed electronically controlled transmission, if ordered, displaced the regular old-school 4-speed auto (which U.S. versions got as standard).

Other few nice touches included in this car are: combination wood and leather steering wheel and shiftknob, orthopeadic seat backrests, and illuminated all-alluminun spill guard door seals.

It's not a sportline is it? It just reminded me of a nice metallic blue ~ '95 E320 sportline cab I saw the other day at Silverstone race track.. very nice, the old cab had never really appealed to me, I always thought they were *too* understated, but this one looked pretty good lowered & all shiny !

later

Yeap, it's a Sportline edition.

What is more amazing is the color combination:

Exterior color: Malachite green metallic (249)
Interior color: Mushroom -beige- leather (265) and wood finish in burled walnut (not zebrano).
Cabriolet top color: brown (746).

Very sharp!

Roof wont come down

I recently returned from holiday, I live in Muscat, Oman, and tried to take the roof down as usual. The windows cames down but the roof will not start to disengage. My car is an E320 1995 model. Any ideas are ther some relays that I can look at. The spanner that is in the toolkit will operate some sort of release behind the back seat but that doesnt seem to release the rear window part of the roof.

Under the hood on right side is a "strap fuse" it may have a hair line crack not visable to eye. Use a jumper wire to bypass.

I love mine! Sounds like the one your describing is the Euro Version of mine.
Get it and have fun! If not, let me know and I may buy it.

Hey Peter,
You are getting a little over- excited over that car ....seeing that the post is from 2002, it has most likely been " Snapped Up " by now .....

Having lived there for several years, Costa Rica has notoriously slow Internet service...

Better to start a new thread with a proper title. When you resurect an old thread it often confuses the speed readers and your new question gets lost in the shuffle.
