Speedo gear help W124

Car stats: 1987 260E

Hello all. So finally I have some free time to work on the clicking noise speedo. Basically, the trip odometer is stuck and no longer count. However, it makes a click sound every 100 meters or so. It drives me nuts, so I have ordered some gears off ebay and wanted to take a crack at it. I have removed and disassembled the unit and actually pried the needle off, and popped off the black plate with the miles-range label below that.

What I found after stumped me, there is this copper(or brass) coil like spring that sits just below the needle and it looks very fragile, I don't know how I can work beneath at the gears without removing this coil. I am pretty sure if I pop off this coil, I will never be able to put it back.

So how do people go about working on replacing the speedo gear on a W124 ?

I don't have a camera handy so I just found a similar photo off google, which refers to the same copper coil. Actually I think it's the same speedo.

Take a picture of how it sits on there and how to put it back . If you look you will see a round taperd peg holding it in The spring will need to go back just as you remove it..And yes it will need to come off to remove the plate. Did you mark the plate before you removed needle ,you have to lift it over the end stop and mark the plate before removal.Failure to do this will mean the speed will be out on assembly. Check out DiselGiant web site for his repair . I think it may have information on Tech Inf at the top of this page .Any questions just ask.Any questions i may help you with ,please PM me.

Hi optimusprime, thanks for the reply. Yes i did lift it over the resting post and it did settle in the bottom left (around 7 o'clock position, right on the little black marker). I was lucky as I was following the guide I found on google. It has the recommendation to use a pair of teaspoon and everything. I will take some pictures and go at it again this weekend.

Good for you . The thing is to inspect the gears on the metal sahaft .And the pot gear comes loose on the other shaft .Make sure you tape all the numbers on the barrel to stop them turning over.\
