'88 260E Broke
Daughter was very very close to her place of employment when she said she noticed a "vibration" then a "thumping sound" and then the "left rear part of the car just kinda dropped down"!!! Boy I sure wish she had stopped at the first 'vibration'
![]() Any guess what actually broke? Was planning to replace the camber struts soon because of worm out rubber bushings. Not sure that would cause this....? Thoughts ? ![]() ![]()

I had a similar problem with my 190D (similar suspension system). Turned out, the rear cross member had rusted through, allowing one of the links to break free. It could be that, or a similar problem with the camber link itself, LCA or axle half shaft. Either way, it's just work. About all the only special tool required might be a spring compressor. It will be obvious when you pull the wheel. If she had stopped when it began vibrating, it wouldn't have been much different.

Thanks Mxfrank for the reply. This car most likely would not have the rusting issue as it is a pretty clean car, rust wise. This is really going to be tough for me in that I'm not going to be able to do the work myself. My father is dying at the hospice facility and it's going to be very tough to find the time through this. I think I forgot to mention that the caliper was lying on the ground with fluid running from it ![]()

Huh the Benz just gave up on her like that? Looks like the control arm separated; not an easy thing to do one would think. Not that I'm the foremost authority on the subject.
You could be looking at a hefty repair bill replacing most of that side... might be a good idea to find a parts car. If I was closer I could do it for you. I can't imagine what you must be going through with your father. The best we can hope for is to be healthy till the end but it doesn't always work that way.

Ok guys, this is gonna be really hard for me but in order that the ol' Benz is vindicated, i must step up and admit what I discovered today
![]() I can't remember for sure but I'm thinking it was Sat after Thanksgiving, I backed the car into the garage to take a look at the multi links in the rear to see what I was gonna need to order as far as parts. Before I raised it up I loosened the lugs on both wheels but started by taking the right side off to have a look. Well, after poking and prodding around a bit, I put the wheel back on and I think I remember going into the house (distraction) and when I returned to the car I simply lowered it back to the ground and rolled it to the street. Yep. I could have caused serious injury to my daughter and others but the good Lord was watching out!! Wow, what a lesson, expensive too ![]() EDIT: My wife reminded me that we were out of town on Sat after Thanksgiving so it HAD to have been the Sat BEFORE... So it had been driven quite a bit on roads where speeds were much higher than the place it broke! What an idiot I was doing that! ![]()

I did the same thing with the SL recently! Had the front wheels off to replace suspension parts, snugged the lug nuts, got distracted by a phone call, dropped the car to the ground and drove off. 15 minutes later, made a turn into a parking lot and felt the whole car wobble and shake. Pulled over and saw 4 of the 5 lugs hanging on for dear life! Got very lucky there was no damage.
I'm usually habitual about double-checking things like that, but we all make mistakes!

This reminds me of the day my friends wheel went past us .I to felt that little wobble ,And then the car sort of lifted up on the right hand side...I was driving .this was my job after he purchased this Sunbeam from me .Also any work on the car i was asked to do it . I knew it like my own hand. Well we had to deliver our club tote payment to our fishing club. And half way there this wheel went past .I knew it was from the Rapier just looking at the hub cap.I looked at Ron my friend ,he looked at me .To that i said its your wheel , he said no its not . He did just the same ,removed the wheel went in to have his tea never fitted all the othe nuts on the wheel. Came out put the hub cap on . Well it went down on the spring anchor on the nearside As i looked out the window it hit the curb and bounced up just missing an upstairs window of the house that was side on to us .On landing it fell on top of this scrap car parked close by. Put the jack under to lift it up .Only thing i could see was just a lottle part of the spring anchor worn down about 5 threads that was all .So lucky call ..lol
