Replaced ignition lock now no steering lock

Hello,

This morning I replaced the ignition switch and upon removing the key I did not hear the usual “click” and now it does not lock the steering wheel with the key removed. This is a 91 300E 3.0 with 368k miles and I dread the thought of changing the steering lock mechanism just to regain steering lock function as it behaves normally and I can live with it like this given its age/mileage.

I do not understand how the steering lock mechanism works at all (and searches have not yielded an answer) and I am wondering if the following scenarios can potentially occur: the steering will lock while stopped with the key removed (leaving me stuck and unable to unlock the wheel?) and worse can it lock while moving?? While cleaning the lock assembly a small piece became dislodged and never to be found……I think this might be interlocked but I just would like to hear from somebody who understands well how the steering lock works and I can safely drive like that….Best,

Thank you!
