Considering W211 wagon, suggestions?

I'm searching for a family car in the sub $10k range. Needs to be large enough for two car seats and cargo for baby stuff. I like the idea of a wagon with the 3rd seat. I actually would prefer non-4matic. An ML could work and would be easier to find but I like the feel of a car so much more than an SUV. I think the e500 seems like a worthwhile upgrade from the 350 but I have driven neither in the e class spec. I would love to hear opinions from owners. Thank you!

Stick to the early m112/m113 engines. The m272/m273 can get very expensive very quickly.
Mercedes Benz balance shaft engine issues. How to check by VIN. M272/273 - MB Medic

And another common engine issue.
