!995 E320 Wagon Vacuum Question

Hi all,

Just replaced the starter motor 300,000 miles! Still starts about every third try...unbelievable!

Whilst doing this switch, a black vacuum line coming out of the transmission broke. I have a length of purple vacuum hosage but I can't find where it connects. Car stated beautifully but when I drove it around the block there is a noticeable "CLUNK" after shifting.

Thank you in advance and have a great Memorial weekend!

Semper Fi!

The transmission modulator is on the left side of the transmission.

Thanks for your answer...

That's the part I know, where does the vacuum line go to?...that's my question.

I know it goes towards the steering rack...but it then disappears.

!995 E320 Wagon Vacuum Question

I believe it goes to the intake manifold. It's the one on top of the manifold next to the throttle body. It has an upside down u-shaped vacuum connector with different sized ends. Try connecting the broken plastic tube ends with a rubber connector as a temporary fix.

The clunk when you downshift without vac is a good sign. It means your tranny has been working properly. When you hook up the plastic vac line to the modulator again it will provide vac to the tranny for downshifts and it should downshift smoothly.

Unbelievable that this is exactly the same design used on my 1981 300SD and it is so good that they were still using it fifteen years later.
