very noisy engine

i own a 1987 300sdl that recently had a head gasket replaced. the cylinder head was rebuilt, fuel injectors were reconditioned, new valves (12) were put in, etc. All this work was done by a friend of mine.

The car performs beautifully on the road. Lots of power.

However, there are 2 problems:

1. when i start it, why does it shake badly for about 10 seconds. The glow plugs are fine (or are they?)

2. this one really upsets me. Why is the engine so loud now? I am talking about the rat-a-tat-a tat that all diesels make. the car was quieter before i had all this work done. Is there some kind of an adjustment problem?

i would appreciate all the help i can get.
thanks.

Sounds like injection pump timing off , or a injection pump gone south.
