Question on 722.3 modulator thrust pin spring

I have a 1981 380sl with the 722.304 transmission and I am replacing the red transmission modulator. However my transmission does not have the spring circled in red in the attached picture. Does anyone know about this spring? Is it optional or required, and if so what the part number is?

Funny thing is the Mercedes Manual shows that Spring for the 722.3xx, yet I was looking at a EPC breakdown for a M119 94/95 722.3xx transmission, and the spring is not present in the Mercedes Print out, and I looked at the TransTech 722.3 Rebuild manual that is enclosed in their kits, and the spring is not present either...

For the life of me and cannot remember seeing the spring, yet I have a 722.3 here with me, but the modulator is missing..

Most parts drawings do not show the spring..

Martin! How have you been?

Martin, I am the one who you helped several years ago swap out a 1998 722.6 transmission with a 2001 722.6 in an 1998 S420 that was so innovative and worked great. Unfortunately a year ago I was rear ended by a HUGE silverado pick-up and the car was totaled. -Otherwise I am sure it would still be running.

I have just about finished rebuilding a 722.3 for my 1981 380SLC and this issue with a missing spring cropped up. I have been pretty careful in its disassembly and reassembly and I do not think I lost any parts.

I too noticed that this part is not on all drawings. In your experience what might be the result of putting the transmission back together without this spring?

Best regards,

Jeff

Jeff,

Thank you for asking!! I'm doing well.. In the meat with these trannies...

I just looked at some actual photos on two transmissions, and no spring was present, but my plastic plunger is pancake like as it touches the modulator, and it has a long plastic shaft into the transmission...

What you would get with no spring? Shifts too soft or too hard, but not late or early...

Here is a thread...

My data and photos for 722.3-722.9 hosted by friend of mine...Look at the last post

Follow the link to a FTP site

A) look at 722.5 from old mac, and look at picture mar_4270

B) In that same 722.5 from old mac is a folder labeled 722.5 from SL look at picture IMG_0941

C) the 722.3n722.4 folder has all the data on these old transmissions i have.

The link from time to time may not work, or be slow, so try it later if you encounter any problems. I need to add more 722.9 stuff with more 722,6 stuff.

Hope it helps,

Martin
