Need help on a 1997 190E 2.3 which has developed a dripping type water leak comming from a machined hole located in the lower portion of the water pump. Could there have been a freeze plug in this location? Belt and pully have been removed. Would rather not remove the water pump unless it is necessary.

Time for a new water pump! Also check the belt & tensioner for wear.

Don't try to plug that hole it is designed into the pump so when it leaks it won't kill the bearings too. Replace now along with a new belt and possibly a tensioner. Look closely at the belt routing before taking it off.!!

Replacement of water pump has cured the problem. Everything is working fine.
However, is there a recommended way of loosening the fan belt for easy removal? Is a special tool required? Thanks. ------------------ |
