1995 C280 periodic no start, then operates 100%
First off, I am on the way to Doc. appt. all day.
No time to search the archives. I apologize. Yesterday, 55 deg. outside, the 95 C280 , 98K miles and new wires and coils, sparks good- new battery, had a blue moon episode of not starting right away. I drove/parked to about 3 stops before parking it at Costco. After about 30 min, I returned and the car would not start. Key turned in ignition would not elicit any response other than dash lights. (no other responses) Would not start in neutral, so I don't suspect the trans shift switch. This happens on a blue moon. Maybe once every two years. I sat it out and popped the hood to look inside etc. After about 15 min of sitting, it worked OK. This is the usual symptom and resolution that I have experienced in the past. It operates fine now as in the past, without any repeat until another blue moon. What could cause this?? (its not due to my not having foot on brake) Thanks

Is the starter not engaging? That's what I'm gathering from your post, but it isn't clear.
If the starter isn't engaging, I'd be looking at neutral safety switch or the key switch as your potential culprits. Next time it happens, hold the key in "start" and try pulling the gear selector slowly through the gears and see if you find a spot where the starter suddenly kicks on. If you do, it's probably shifter bushings (assuming the '95 doesn't yet have the 722.6), or NSS.

A nice fellow member suggested that replacing fuse #5 is the fix.
Diesel 300, yes, I can turn the key all the way and no starter engagement or anything. I am going to replace fuse #5 and also if it does it again in another blue moon, I will try keeping the key on start and moving the shifter. Thanks But it continues to work fine now. No hesitation in starting. Shifter bushings were all replaced some 7 months ago during the trans rebuild.

Fuse #5 was not associated with the starter or trans so I found the correct fuse and swapped like from the mirror adjustment. Until next blue moon...
Oldsinner , I do not know if it has a k38 relay.... Thanks Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk

I know the s class had a relay to energize the starter,I had to replace mine. Mine was under the hood, behind fuses. Some cars next to gas pedal under carpet, and some behind glove box.
