Urgent- in the yard

Thought on the block but...

Where is the warm up device on a 380 or 500 engine?

Thank y’all in advance!

Typically in front of the spark distributor (vs fuel distributor).

Hello Sixto,

Since you seem to have a good handle on the electronically fuel injected gas cars, what is a good manual/source which explains piece by piece how the fuel injection system functions on the 1983 380SL? I have one with a great body and engine, but poor upholstery (my upholstery guy is dying!) and I want to maintain the power plant properly. No skimming on cheap parts or half-way fixes. But I would like to understand and get an explanation of that Bosch system.

Thanks,
S

PS I have also picked up a 1950 170 sans engine that may get a W123/616 engine and transmission. The brakes and suspension on that car are pre-war and need some kind of upgrade, just don't know what kind!

Your 380SL has KE-Jetronic which is basically a mechanical injection system.

This book goes deeper than my tiny brain can follow. It’s not a diagnostic guide for every configuration but it’ll help you figure out what to try next.

Nice find on the 170! I wonder if you’d be better served by an OM601 than a 616. If you’re really creative, cut the body off a 201 190D and set the 170 body on it. I don’t know if the 170s hood and fenders will go over the 201’s upper suspension attachments.

Here’s some beefier parts for you - https://sacramento.craigslist.org/pts/d/mercedes-benz/6745473204.html

Strelnik - I have the Mercedes factory service manual for the M116.96 engine (this is the 3.8 that is in the 1983 380SL). I bought it new when I had my 83 380SEL. It contains about 100 pages of troubleshooting and repair information on the mechanical gasoline injection system (CIS). It also covers the M117.96 (5.0) engine. It has some grease stains but is complete. PM if interested.
