Battery light on dash 190d

My 1985 - 190d 2.2 battery display is lit - dim at idle then bright on acceleration then when im driving for a while the display flashes steady. Then later will return to solid. Any ideas?
Everything else is working fine headlights are not dim nor are the dash lights.
