M102 hole in timing cover??
I have a 190E '92 with the 2.3 M102. I'm currently refreshing a bunch of things on the engine and decided to do a much-needed cleanup as the engine and engine bay were totally disgusting. After spraying degreaser and scrubbing the lower right (to the left of the balancer when looking at the engine) portion of the timing chain cover, I noticed a little hole:
![]() ![]() Is this hole supposed to be there or is this broken? There are no other cracks or signs of impact nearby... |

doesn't look like it was there on purpose based on the irregular shape

Looks like there is a dowel pin in that area. Either the cover was thin in that area then broke out when drilled or it was removed / replaced during a repair and the hole had debris in it then a thin spot broke through.
' In any event I'd clean and dry the area and apply a some silicone to seal the hole from water getting in. Based on the holes location, this isn't a leak point for any fluids. |
