check engine light / engine electronics

I searched and got some info, here are the particulars of my situation:

1996 M104 engine, 109k miles.

Wife stopped for gas, it was EMPTY (she got 18.2 gallons/tank capacity is 18.8 according to the manual) she topped it off, but I have instructed her not to over fill, so she says she didn't ; CEL came on as she was starting it. It runs good, no recent changes or quirks, and after the CEL came on it still runs normally. exhaust smells normal. Gas cap on tight.

I will take it to the dealer in the AM, but anybody got any ideas?

P.S can i clear the CEL myself (disconnect the battery? Would it have gone off if the condition was remedied or does it stay on till the dealer clears it??

thanks,
-Tom

It will go off if the issues that caused it to come on have gone away after a few driving cycles. I would try to clear it by pressing the button next to the LED if it has one. Somewhere on here there are directions for how to read it. Not sure if this is applicable to your model though. If not, just disconnect the negative lead on the battery for a minutes or so and if whatever set it off has cleared itself up the CE light should stay off. If it comes back you have an issue that you need to "read the code" to find out what is causing it to come on. Everytime mine has ever come on it either needed the egr line "rodded out" to the intake manifold or it needed a new O2 sensor.

This is a 210 model so it has OBD-II.

I don't think it has an LED like 1995 and older W124's.

It has a better way of retrieving codes, and I think it's through the radio or a/c display.

I know it sounds crazy, but it's in the archives somewhere if you can figure out what to put in for a search.

That would be nice if I can retrieve the codes myself without any special tools or software, I cannot find any way to do this in the search, thought.

I will d/c the battery and see if the light goes out.

Thanks a lot guys, I'll keep you "posted"
