W108 280se 3.5 manual conversion questions

Hello all! New user here, two years ago I acquired by chance a 1971 280se 3.5 v8 imported from Germany in 1982. It is time for me to begin refreshing the engine, bay, suspension and other components so I can bring it back to roadworthiness and enjoy it! One thing that intrigued me was the thought of a manual conversion, I plan on putting lots of miles on it in the warm months and road trips as well as it should be, and having a 50 year old slush box underneath me makes me both bored and nervous. I’ve been told the 3.5 is a very happy motor compared to the 4.5, so the manual should bring out that character even more. I’m no stranger to manual conversions, I primarily play with classic BMW’s have have done engine and gearbox conversions before but these Mercedes’ cars are very new to me. Can anyone help identify what gearbox I should be seeking, which are the most reliable etc (I’ve been told the 4 speed) as well as whether or not there will be any wiring involved other than the normal reverse light wiring? Any input is appreciated!

Keep the original parts as 3.5 coupes have gotten quite valuable. I think you want a 4-speed from another 3.5 car. It could be a w116 or r107 or c107 or maybe a w108 or w108. There will probably be a lot of parts to collect to do it right, but the fact is that I don’t know. I have a few 350sl/SLC 4-speed cars, but have no desire to sell any of them.

just be aware that mercedes did not import v8 manuals into the states. any v8 stick is a euro or jap car. makes it tough to find.

I don't see coupe mentioned anywhere. But regardless factory parts that people will come off of are rare. Look at t5 transmission to iron block m116/117 in performance paddock and non mb trans to mb engine for tons of ideas. Get comfy.
